Fun Facts About Bats For Kids

Did you know that bats are mammals like us? Yes, that’s right. And one key difference between bats and us is that they’re the only flying mammals. Here are more fun facts about bats.

1. Over 1000 species of bats exist in the world. Unbelievable!

2. Like owls, they’re nocturnal animals. Bats spend the whole day sleeping but become active at night. 

3. Bats’ wings are part of their skin. They extend from the body.

4. They feed on insects but can also eat blood, fish, and fruit.

5. Vampire bats are a type of three bat species. They enjoy eating blood.

6. Bats are also called Chiroptera, which means ‘hand wing.’ Their wing structure looks like our hands.

7. Compared to other mammals, there are more bat species. 

8. Flying foxes are bats that eat fruit. You can find them in Asia, Africa, and Australia. These bats are helpful because they help with pollinating fruit trees. 

9. The Malayan Flying Fox is the biggest bat with a six-foot wingspan. It weighs up to 2 lbs or about 900 grams. And the smallest bat is the Bumblebee bat or Kitties hog-nosed bat. 

10. Bats help us with keeping bugs or insects under control. That’s because they eat plenty of insects. They can eat between 2000-6000 insects per night. 

11. They have poor eyesight, but they rarely bump into objects. Like whales and dolphins, bats use echolocation to find their direction. They send out noise and then wait for the echo to come back. If there’s no echo, it means their flying route is clear. They can move forward.

12. Colonies are large groups of bats. They like dark areas, such as rock crevices, caves, people’s homes, and dead trees. 

13. To save their energy, bats hang upside down. Another reason they stay this way is that they can’t stand upright. 

14. Even when bats are eating or drinking, they hang upside down. The force of gravity doesn’t affect them. 

15. Vampire bats get blood from animals, including pigs, chickens, cows, and goats. They can drink a tablespoon of blood at night time. Three Vampire bat species exist in Mexico, Central and South America.

16. Bats can live up to 30 years. 

17. They can also fly up to 100 mph. The Mexican free-tailed bats can reach this speed. Incredible!
