If the month of May was a color, what color would it be? We might imagine that the month of May has a certain sound or smell. I imagine the color of May to be yellow and sound cheerful like birds chirping outside. Kids might imagine the sound of splashing in the pool with friends or the cool breeze of the days right before summer.
Fun Holidays in May for Kids to Celebrate
There are a few holidays in May that aren’t as well-known, and kids can have a blast celebrating them-a double celebration if May is a birthday month! We can express the joyful month of May through fun coloring pages.
May 2nd National Truffle Day
Most kids (and adults) love chocolate. An awesome way to celebrate this classic treat is to eat some yummy chocolate truffles on National Truffle Day. A traditional chocolate truffle has a ganache filled center with a chocolate coating iced and powdered with more chocolate. Another great way to celebrate National Truffle Day is with fun activities like May coloring pages as we indulge.
According to legend, a man living in France named Louis Dufour created the very first chocolate truffle way back in 1895. It’s less clear when National Truffle Day became official, but my guess is that so long as we’re eating them, it may not matter.
May 4th Bird Day
Another cool day in May is Bird Day, where we can celebrate our love and appreciation for birds. It’s fun to explore what types of birds we have in our own backyards. Kids can learn how to identify birds by listening to their unique calls or learn how to recognize various birds by color or type of feathers.
Bird Day was founded by a man from Pennsylvania called Charles Almanzo Babcock in 1894. Babcock’s mission was to bring awareness to the importance of bird conservation. Kids can use May coloring pages to celebrate birds and use colors that represent the birds found in the local area. When we learn about birds, we understand why the term birdbrain is misguided. Birds are in fact quite intelligent!
May 5th National Astronaut Day
National Astronaut Day is the day to celebrate Astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. Kids can learn about the men and women who have traveled into the depths of outer space and find a greater appreciation for what they do. I used to love to visit the planetarium and walk around the museum learning about the universe, space flight, and cool things like magnetism.
We can also observe our universe by looking up at the sky on a clear night with a telescope. When I was a kid, my mom worked as a translator for NASA astronauts, and I remember thinking how cool that was. I loved imagining how scary the huge storms must be on other planets or how hot they would feel to visit. Astronauts explore the places most of us will only dream about. We can remember National Astronaut Day through the month of May by coloring pages.
Historical Events in May
There is something fascinating about each day in May and kids can learn about one cool event every day this month. Use May coloring pages to introduce a new topic-historical moments in music, history, and culture. For instance, on May 7, 1970, The Beatles released their last album, Long and Winding Road. On May 7, 1934, the biggest pearl in the whole world was found in the Philippines. And on May 9, 1886, the syrup used to make Coca-Cola was created. Just because you cannot go back in time doesn’t mean you cannot revisit the past through stories, pictures, and coloring pages!
