The natural hazard volcano provides an explosive art subject. Coloring pages with this peril as their subject matter provide an extensive set of features requiring a range of colors, including yellow, gold, and orange for the fire and explosions from the volcano. These drawings also require brown and black for the volcano’s exterior, grays and blues for the sky and the ashes blowing around, and white and pearl for the snow-capped peaks of mountains in the distance.

A volcano that has already erupted once or more develops a peak that resembles the top of a mountain except it has a hole at the top. These naturally forming perils don’t constantly erupt. They experience long periods of dormancy. During that time, their mountainsides may develop flora, such as trees or grasses, requiring green colors to illustrate. Volcanos in Costa Rica provide ample examples of this volcano type.

Many countries of the world have volcanoes, such as Iceland and the United States. At present, about 1,500 potentially active volcanos exist worldwide. In the US, there are about 169. The volcanos in these distinctive areas look vastly different from one another. This means you’ll need to determine where the volcano on the coloring sheet is located to know how to color it.

An erupting volcano creates ribbons of orange lava, a hot liquid that flows from the magma at the center of the volcano. Once the eruption stops and the lava cools, it hardens and turns black.

In the US, volcanos make their home in 24 states. Alaska and Hawaii are probably best known for these geothermal wonders but in some states, the last eruption occurred millions of years ago. Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted in 2021 as did Mount Pavlof in Alaska. Conversely, Utah’s volcanos most recently erupted about 1050 AD, so it’s been a few years.

Some volcanos erupt in relatively uninhabited areas, while others spring up near towns. The latter type causes emergency management workers to need to evacuate the area. They don’t want another Pompeii on their hands. These volcano coloring pages might include such emergency personnel and town residents. Color their clothes as you see fit but remember that they would all be soot-covered. This would make their skin appear gray, the color of ashes.

In some areas of Alaska, the volcanos erupt in areas resplendent with wildlife. Coloring pages depicting these areas may include bears and moose. These animals require brown and black to color their fur. A moose’s antlers typically appear a dark beige or tan.

To make volcano pictures more vibrant, add gold glitter glue to the lava flows and the magma. This gives the lava flows the sparkle of an actual fire, like flickering flames.

When a coloring sheet turns out particularly well, consider mounting it to a poster board, then framing it. Another option is to cover it in decoupage and let it harden. This creates a sturdier picture, suitable for framing.
