Witches can be charming, adorable, and very kid-friendly, or they can be particularly terrifying and wicked, even for adults. The Grimm brothers, Disney, and others have leveraged these versatile magic users for hundreds of years to influence what we consider a modern Halloween witch.
Witch coloring pages are an excellent activity for younger and older kids. The pictures can be versatile depending on age, with cute witch pictures for younger children and some scary witch pictures for older kids. There are even some beautiful witch pictures in these printable coloring sheets.
A Brief History of Witches
The history of witches is a sad one. From the 1400s through the 1500s, thousands of witches were put to death in European nations. Generally, individuals were executed by hanging or burning at the stake. In large part, this was due to early Christian populations fearing witchcraft or devil practice amongst them. Unfortunately, this purge of supposed witches cost the lives of many innocents. In the Americas, the most famous case of witchcraft is in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. While over 150 individuals were accused of witchcraft, only 18 were executed in Salem. Despite witches’ sad and dark history, the legends of witches have continued through the centuries, up to today’s modern conception of the Witch.
Witch Stereotypes
One of the best things about coloring witches is the familiar attributes, companions, and tools that witches bring along with them to conduct their hocus pocus. Here are a few of the most recognized features and objects associated with witches that you can find in your witch coloring sheet.
The Witch’s nose
Like vampires and their fangs, or a spider with its legs and eyes, witches have several physical features associated with their appearance. For some reason, witches are often considered to have pointy or hooked noses. Why does the sharpness of an individual’s nose make it look more witchy? I don’t know. However, another common physical feature of witches is worts. If you combine a hooked nose with a wort on it, there can be no doubt of a witch in that scenario. But, when coloring your witch coloring pages, make sure to spend extra time on the nose.
Animal Companions
Another common trope amongst witches is the existence of particular animal companions. Witches are often seen in the company of a black cat. These fierce felines often do the Witch’s bidding. Coloring pages of witches often feature a black cat. I guess the cats don’t have to be black because everyone knows all cats are evil, but they are often the pitch of midnight. Frogs and toads are also frequently seen with witches. I am unsure exactly why that is, but perhaps it explains the worts. Witches have also been accused of turning people into frogs or toads. As you print out your witch coloring pages, make sure to look out for their animal companions.
Witch Tools
Witches generally have certain tools for their trade. Commonly, witches are thought to ride a broomstick through the night. It is usually portrayed in pictures of a witch flying on her broom with a cat perched on the back. Another standard tool of the Witch is a big black cauldron. This giant pot is generally the tool used to brew the Witch’s magic potion or other sinister parts of her craft. Finally, perhaps the most iconic attribute of a scary witch is the pointy witch hat that they all seem to wear. As you color these witch-themed coloring pages, watch out for these fun witchy tools in the pictures.
